Nergica welcomes Hydro-Québec's 3000-megawatt announcement

May 6, 2025|Press release

Nergica welcomes the announcement to develop 3,000 MW of solar energy by 2035. We are delighted that this plan is in line with the recommendations made in Nergica's study Énergie solaire photovoltaïque dans le mix énergétique québécois - Analyse et perspectives (2021), which put forward the case for more ambitious development of solar energy to meet Quebec's growing energy needs.

The study points out that Quebec has greater photovoltaic potential than Germany, which in 2023 ranked fifth worldwide for large-scale installed capacity, and second for decentralized installations (source: International Energy Agency). A strong potential that has so far been little exploited in Quebec.

"For several years now, Nergica has been recommending the integration of photovoltaic solar energy into Quebec's future energy supply. It is therefore with great enthusiasm that we welcome this recent announcement by Hydro-Québec. With 5,415 MW of installed solar capacity in Canada at the end of 2024, Hydro-Québec's intention to add 3,000 MW of solar power over the next decade is a major step forward that will accelerate the deployment of solar photovoltaics across Canada."adds Frédéric Côté, General Manager of Nergica.

Nergica supports Hydro-Québec in its approach, and is delighted to see that it is based on three main principles, including a commitment to promoting Quebec content and maximizing economic benefits for Quebec.

What's more, the logistical advantages of photovoltaic solar power - both in terms of installation and maintenance - make it a particularly well-suited technology for supplying autonomous networks.

Nergica is ready to support future large-scale solar farm projects, and reiterates the importance of continuing to increase research and innovation efforts in the photovoltaic solar field in Quebec.
