Government of Canada Supports Nergica in its Renewable Energy Mission

Nergica is both delighted and grateful to be the recipient of a $3,350,000 grant awarded by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED). The grant covers the fiscal years of 2019 to 2022 and will allow Nergica to continue its pursuit of structuring, developing and sustaining solar and wind power and integrating these technologies onto the grid.

Nergica recently acquired a Windcube 200S 3D lidar produced by the manufacturer Leosphere (a Vaisala company). Laser and lidar (acronym for “light detection and ranging”) are remote sensing techniques based on the property analysis of a light beam travelling back to its emitter.

Every year, icing results in significant production losses for wind farms. Although nacelle-mounted ice detectors are still commonly used, rotor-mounted instruments are beginning to appear on the market. However, a quantitative study of their performance has yet to be conducted, making it difficult for industry players to select the most appropriate device. It is in this context that Nergica has published a study that compares the performance of three rotor-mounted ice detectors.

This report presents the results of a study on the validation of the GEM-LAM-Jones-Makkonen (GLJM) model for forecasting meteorological icing. Mandated by Natural Resources Canada, this validation aimed to assess the ability of the GLJM model to predict icing episodes at wind farms and the associated production losses.
