Abstract

Every year, icing causes significant production losses for wind farms. Although icing detectors on nacelles are commonly used, rotor icing detectors are beginning to appear on the market. However, no quantitative study of their performance has been conducted to date. This makes it difficult for the industry to select the most appropriate device. With this in mind, Nergica has published a study comparing the performance of three rotor-mounted ice detectors for wind turbines.

Highlights

  • Overview of the comparative study of three rotor ice detectors, namely the BLADEcontrol from Weidmüller, the Rotor Ice Control fos4X and Eologix
  • Parameters evaluated: technical availability, total duration of icing measured during the period, severity, and temporal accuracy
  • Reference data: frost measured by analyzing images from two cameras installed on the hub of a wind turbine and by analyzing the turbine's status codes
