Press Release | Nergica Welcomes the Introduction of the Energy Bill

June 6, 2024

Gaspé, June 6, 2024 – Nergica, an applied research center that drives innovation in renewable energy through research, technical assistance, technology transfer, and support for businesses and communities, welcomes the tIntroduction of Bill 69 by the Minister of Economy, Innovation, and Energy, Pierre Fitzgibbon.

A key player in the energy transition for nearly 25 years, Nergica is one of Canada’s leading applied research centers for renewable energy and the only one in the Americas equipped with full-scale infrastructure designed for cold climates and complex terrain. Drawing on this unique expertise and cutting-edge innovations, Nergica is committed to bringing its experts together to thoroughly review the bill in order to inform the discussion on renewable energy and provide recommendations to lawmakers.

The first major reform of energy governance in 25 years, the bill ensuring the responsible governance of energy resources and amending various legislative provisions represents a significant modernization of Quebec’s approach to energy, making it more agile, transparent, and efficient.

Optimizing the Production and Use of Energy Resources

Nergica highlights the Quebec government’s goal of establishing an Integrated Energy Resources Plan (PGIR), which should provide a transparent overview of the province’s energy resource potential and help anticipate Quebec’s energy needs in a sustainable manner. Nergica operates in communities hosting renewable energy projects and has had teams on the ground across Quebec for more than two decades. The company has observed the critical need for long-term predictability, transparency, and the optimization of integrated energy resource management for all stakeholders in the ecosystem.

In order to preserve our energy independence while ensuring a sustainable and responsible energy transition, it will also be important to revitalize our manufacturing sector. The contribution of the entire value chain would, in particular, help foster expertise and drive innovation, ensuring that the energy transition serves as a catalyst for economic benefits for Quebec.

Quotes

“We are currently undergoing a historic reform that, in our view, is essential to achieving Quebec’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals by 2050. To achieve this, we must ensure effective collaboration among the government, municipalities, citizens, First Nations, Inuit, centers of expertise, industries, and businesses. We believe these targets can be met if we strengthen Quebec’s energy security and our resilience in the face of our dependence on fossil fuels, particularly by diversifying our sources of renewable energy. Efforts to optimize and improve efficiency must also go hand in hand with increasing renewable energy production. We applaud Québec’s vision, which is committed to fostering a strong green economy—achieved, among other things, through support for innovation, the development of new technologies, and the modernization of existing infrastructure.” -Frédéric Côté, Executive Director of Nergica
