Sharing knowledge for a sustainable future: Nergica welcomes Inuit delegation to Gaspé

September 19, 2025|News

Nunavik's only Inuit renewable energy developer, Les Énergies Tarquti, accompanied by members of the Quaqtaq and Puvirnituq communities, visited Gaspé as part of the second edition of its Renewable Energy Exploration Tourits Renewable Energy Exploration Tour. Nergica was delighted to contribute to the success of the event.

Diesel as Nunavik's sole energy source

The energy transition is of particular importance in Nunavik, where the majority of communities rely entirely on diesel to provide electricity and heating for their populations. In collaboration with Tarquti, the communities of Quaqtaq and Puvirnituq are each developing a wind power project that will reduce their use of diesel. The projects are scheduled to come on stream in 2027 et 2028.

Three days of knowledge sharing in Gaspé

It was an honor for Nergica to participate in the tour's programming, organizing three days of activities to discover the industry's must-sees in the Greater Gaspé region. Nergica's research site gave several group members their first glimpse of wind turbines in operation. They were given a presentation by the site operations supervisor, and were able to discuss and ask questions directly to Nergica's operations and maintenance team about the operation, maintenance and safety standards involved in running a wind farm.

Putting Quebec expertise to work

A number of specialists from Quebec's wind power industry took part in the activities. Techéol, Ganex, Pesca Environnement and Steeve Côté, who heads the Caribou Ungava project, enriched the tour with presentations ranging from cold-climate wind farm operations to environmental issues. Their complementary knowledge illustrates the wealth of expertise behind wind power development in Quebec. We thank them for their invaluable contribution.

Technical workshops at Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles

To round off the program, participants were invited to the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles for hands-on workshops and demonstrations, including a simulated rescue from height in a wind turbine nacelle dedicated to training. Access to full-scale equipment at the CEGEP's Centre québécois de formation en maintenance d'éoliennes enabled them to familiarize themselves with the technical skills and equipment essential to the operation and maintenance of a wind farm's infrastructure.

Collaboration: the key to a successful energy transition

For several years now, Nergica has been supporting Tarquti in the development of renewable energy projects in Nunavik. As a research center for renewable energies, Nergica supports Tarquti in evaluating the adaptation of renewable technologies to the specific context of Northern Quebec, in promoting the dissemination of knowledge on renewable energies, and in supporting the analysis of meteorological data collected in the communities. This collaboration is a good example of how, by sharing our expertise and knowledge, we can contribute to a sustainable energy future.
