Solar photovoltaics: A Promising Resource for Off-Grid Sites

October 30, 2018

Greenhouse gas reduction targets, combined with the fact that solar PV projects are becoming increasingly cost-effective, are creating a very favorable economic environment for the development of innovations and projects. But what about the use of PV systems in off-grid microgrids, most of which are located in northern regions? Whether in terms of materials, expertise, or demonstration projects, these advances suggest that solar PV will be among the leading solutions for the future of the energy transition.

Highlights

• In Canada, the sale price of commercial PV projects fell from 12.60 CAD/W in 2006 to 2.50 CAD/W in 2016, representing a relative reduction of approximately 80%.
• The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that solar PV will see significant growth by 2050.
• Several demonstration projects have been launched in recent years.
