Press Release – Nergica Welcomes the Focus on Stimulating Innovation and Knowledge Development, a Key Priority of the Quebec Strategy on Green Hydrogen and Bioenergy 2030

May 25, 2022

QUEBEC CITY, May 25, 2022 – Nergica welcomes the Quebec Strategy on Green Hydrogen and Bioenergy 2030, announced today by the Legault government, which focuses on stimulating innovation and knowledge. This strategy is part of an effort to increase Quebec’s energy self-sufficiency, contribute to local development, and diversify our energy mix.

To this end, the Government of Quebec aims to reduce GHG emissions by 37.5% from 1990 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The Strategy has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by up to 4 Mt, demonstrating a commitment to accelerating the pace of progress toward these ambitious carbon neutrality targets.

This strategy stems from a consultation process conducted by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, in which Nergica has been actively involved in recent months. These consultations helped identify key measures to accelerate the development of the green hydrogen and bioenergy sectors in Quebec. In this context, Nergica, in collaboration with the CCTT Energy Task Force and the CITEQ-FRQNT consortium (Catalyst for Innovation in Quebec’s Energy Transition), has submitted a brief on green hydrogen and bioenergy which highlights, among other things, the need for Quebec to position itself as a leader in the production and development of cutting-edge technologies such as green hydrogen and bioenergy.

As a research and innovation center for renewable energy, and as a college-affiliated technology transfer center affiliated with the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des îles, Nergica is pleased that research and the development of the skilled workforce of the future are at the heart of the strategy.

Nergica also welcomes the elements of the Strategy that highlight the potential of research funding and educational institutions to advance expertise in green hydrogen and bioenergy. As energy sources, they are one of the solutions for an integrated energy mix in Quebec’s energy portfolio in response to the urgent need to accelerate the energy transition. They complement energy efficiency and enable greater integration of renewable energy sources to electrify Quebec’s economy.

We support the effort to focus on sectors that cannot be directly electrified, thereby enabling us to decarbonize our economy where direct electrification is not possible. This applies in particular to certain niche sectors such as industry, green chemistry, fertilizers, and heavy transportation.

The energy transition necessarily requires synergy and a broad mobilization of all stakeholders. By bringing together the economy, innovation, the environment, natural resources, and energy, the Strategy is a fine example of the collaboration needed among government departments to address the challenges of reducing GHG emissions. Nergica is ready to participate, in consultation with industry stakeholders, in the development of these renewable energy sectors in Quebec.
