Abstract:

To meet communities’ electricity and heating needs, off-grid systems in northern Canada rely primarily on fossil fuels. This situation has negative environmental and economic consequences, as well as impacts on the health of these communities.

Nergica and CanmetÉNERGIE have partnered on a research project to explore the benefits of photovoltaic (PV) solar energy in this specific context. This collaboration has helped identify the challenges that must be addressed to optimize the deployment of this renewable energy source. It has been used to analyze the performance of solar PV systems operating in environments with harsh climatic conditions.

By attending the webinar, you’ll get a glimpse of the findings of this research project, which also proposes ways forward for the reliable and cost-effective integration of solar PV energy in Canada’s Far North—particularly in Nunavik—and for reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
