Measuring Noise Reduction in Wind Turbines Using FeatherEdge Technology

Wind turbine noise remains a concern for communities living near wind farms. To explore a promising solution, we installed Biome Renewables’ FeatherEdge technology on one of the wind turbines at our research site, in partnership with Biome Renewables.

Inspired by the silent flight of the owl, this serration technology for wind turbine blades is based on the principle of phase interference to make the blades’ movement even quieter. Our demonstration project aims to measure the noise reduction achieved after installation, assess the wind turbine’s performance, and validate the mechanical loads experienced by the machine. This approach combines the comfort of neighboring communities with the performance of the installations, leading to greater social acceptance of the wind energy sector.
