In Quebec, municipalities are on the front lines of the energy transition. They have authority over land use planning and play a decisive role in facilitating renewable energy projects. However, making informed decisions requires a detailed understanding of technologies that are not yet widely used in the region.
In partnership with the Fédération québécoise des municipalités, we have developed a series of easy-to-understand resources on solar and wind energy: two fact sheets accompanied by two short videos, designed for elected officials and municipal staff. The goal is to provide municipalities with reliable information to support informed decision-making from the very beginning of a project.
Each fact sheet follows the same structure: how the technology works, the Quebec and Canadian markets, the benefits and challenges, the financial aspects, a project timeline, and the support tools available to municipalities. The short video clips summarize the key points in a concise format, providing an introduction to the topic. Examples of projects carried out in Quebec—ranging from community-based to municipal initiatives—ground the discussion in concrete realities.
These tools are part of the initiative My Green Municipality from the FQM. They combine our scientific expertise with the FQM’s knowledge of the municipal sector, so that every community can tackle its projects with a solid foundation. All tools are available for direct download online on the My Green Municipality from the FQM.
In addition to these resources, this partnership aims to strengthen communities’ energy literacy and support them so that the transition can be implemented in a way that best reflects local realities.
