Le projet

The lighting on wind turbines, which is required for aviation safety, can cause a nuisance to neighboring communities when it remains on at full brightness at all times. Together with TechnoStrobe Inc., we have validated the LIDS system, a monitoring software program that adjusts the brightness of the lights based on horizontal visibility, while ensuring they function properly.

The system adjusts the lighting based on visibility measured by sensors, reducing light intensity when conditions permit. This project involved several infrastructure upgrades: replacing beacons on two weather towers and one wind turbine, relocating and installing horizontal visibility sensors, and connecting a sensor to the nacelle’s electrical box. This technology benefits communities living near wind farms by limiting light pollution without compromising aviation safety.

The Objectives

  • validate software that monitors the proper operation of traffic lights
  • adjust the light intensity of the beacons based on the measured horizontal visibility
  • limit light pollution for neighboring communities without compromising aviation safety

Our Solutions

  • Validation of the software for monitoring and adjusting light intensity based on horizontal visibility
  • Replacement of light beacons on two weather towers and one wind turbine
  • Relocation and installation of horizontal visibility detectors
  • Installation of an electrical box and connection of a sensor to the gondola's control box

Highlights

  • 7 light beacons installed at 3 Nergica facilities

  • 2 horizontal visibility sensors installed

  • 3 electrical boxes installed

  • Adjustment of light intensity based on visibility and continuous monitoring of the system

  • media coverage in *Le Pharillon*, Radio-Canada, and Télé-Gaspé
