Validation of the LIDS Variable-Intensity Lighting System

The lighting on wind turbines, which is required for aviation safety, can cause a nuisance to neighboring communities when it remains on at full brightness at all times. Together with TechnoStrobe Inc., we have validated the LIDS system, a monitoring software program that adjusts the brightness of the lights based on horizontal visibility, while ensuring they function properly.
The system adjusts the lighting based on visibility measured by sensors, reducing light intensity when conditions permit. This project involved several infrastructure upgrades: replacing beacons on two weather towers and one wind turbine, relocating and installing horizontal visibility sensors, and connecting a sensor to the nacelle’s electrical box. This technology benefits communities living near wind farms by limiting light pollution without compromising aviation safety.
