Measuring Noise Reduction in Wind Turbines Using FeatherEdge Technology

Wind turbine noise remains a concern for communities living near wind farms. To explore a promising solution, we installed Biome Renewables’ FeatherEdge technology on one of the wind turbines at our research site, in partnership with Biome Renewables and Techeol.
Inspired by the silent flight of an owl, this serration technology for wind turbine blades is based on the principle of phase interference to make the blades’ movement even quieter. Our research project aims to measure the noise reduction achieved after installing these serrations, optimize the wind turbine controller to improve performance, and validate the mechanical loads experienced by the turbine. This approach combines the comfort of neighboring communities with the performance of the wind turbines, thereby fostering greater social acceptance of the wind energy sector.
