Lidar, a remote wind measurement instrument, offers significant opportunities for the wind energy sector, but its adoption still faces several technical obstacles. Since 2012, we have represented Canada on the International Energy Agency’s IEA Wind Task 32 working group, which brings together experts from several countries to address this issue.
This group is working together to overcome barriers to the use of lidar in four wind energy applications: resource assessment, energy performance, load control, and complex flow patterns. Specifically, it serves as an international platform for exchanging information on research activities, lidar performance measurement projects, and future needs in research, development, and standardization. By participating in this collaboration, we are helping to advance knowledge and best practices on a global scale, for the benefit of the entire industry.
