Assessing the Performance of Turbine Rotor Ice Detector Systems | An overview

Nergica has published a study that compares the performance of three different rotor-mounted ice detectors. You may purchase this study by clicking here. Interested? Obtain the white paper for an overview of this study.

Summary

Every year, icing results in significant production losses for wind farms. Although nacelle-mounted ice detectors are still commonly used, rotor-mounted instruments are beginning to appear on the market. However, a quantitative study of their performance has yet to be conducted, making it difficult for industry players to select the most appropriate device. It is in this context that Nergica has published a study that compares the performance of three rotor-mounted ice detectors.

Highlights

  • Overview of comparative study of three rotor-mounted ice detectors, namely Weidmüller’s BLADEcontrol, fos4X’s Rotor Ice Control and Eologix
  • Parameters assessed: technical availability, total duration of icing measured throughout the period, severity and temporal accuracy
  • Reference data: ice measured through analysis of i) images from two cameras installed on the turbine’s hub, and ii) turbine status codes
